Location
The Sahara Desert, also known as the "Great Desert", covers 3.6 square miles of North Africa. It is close to the size of the United states. It covers the countries of Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Sudan, and Tunisia. On the western side, the Sahara is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. To the north, it is borderd by the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlas Mountains. On the east, you will find the Red sea. The southern part of the desert is bordered by Sudan and the Niger River Valley.
Sahara's Environmental Issues
Did you know that in one point in time the Sahara Desert had a wetter climate with more grasslands and plant and animal species? Around 5,000 years ago, scientists discovered from prehistoric cave drawings that depicted lush green vegetation that there was a major climatic shift in this region, causing the area to become drier and and turn into a hot desert. Scientists are using dust levels to determine how a wetter climate can be produced in the dry Sahara.
As more and more trees get cut down by the people living in the desert, the less rainfall there is. This creates more airborne dust making it hotter and harder to form rain clouds.
Using off road vehicles on the desert terrain can cause irreparable damage to the desert habitat.
What We Can Do
To keep the Sahara safe, we can do many things. First, we can drive off-road vehicles on designated roads and trails. People can use water efficiently and control salinization to improve the arid land. We can also plant Leguminous plants that will help restore soil fertility by extracting nitrogen from the air. The future of this desert depends on us and our actions.
